Spurs Beat Arsenal In North London Derby

On 6th December, Jose Mourinho’s Spurs hosted Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in a much awaited local derby in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho’s men looked for topping the table with the win while Arsenal looked to stop their recent unbeaten run. In the end, it was Tottenham who came on top as their strike duo; Son and Kane, both scored in the 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

About the Game

Spurs lined up with their usual 4-2-3-1 formation while the visitors with their 3-4-3 formation. The host were strong as they came into this game winning 4 of their last 6 league games and were sitting 2nd in the table. On the other hand, Arsenal has been too inconsistent as they’ve lost 4 of their last 6 league games and were desperate for some points.

The host did not take long as Tottenham’s Son Heung-min scored a stunning goal, assisted by none other than Harry Kane, in the 13th minute. It was a classic Jose Mourinho counter attack as they soaked the Arsenal pressure and as soon as they got the ball, Kane passed it to Son on left flank, who had ample space ahead of him and tore the Arsenal defence by scoring from 30 yards! It was a quick blow to the Gunners who were desperately looking for any kind of gap in Spurs defence.

Even though Arsenal had the majority of the possession they could do little with it, whereas, whenever Spurs received the ball, they always looked like a threat to the Arsenal defence. Hojberg could be seen having another solid game at the centre mid-field area which made him win the Man of the Match award.

The 2nd goal for Tottenham came just before half time at 45 minute, when Spurs hit another lightening sharp counter attack as Son drew a defender towards him and played the ball to Harry Kane who put the goal at the back of the net with his thunderous left foot strike. It was a moment of joy for the visitors who were leading 2-0 at half time and looked comfortable with this lead. Spurs showed a display of efficient and clinical first half while Arsenal just couldn’t break the Spurs defensive line.

The second half Arsenal seemed a bit better and showed some determination to break through the defence but it was Tottenham’s goalkeeper who made some good saves to give the visitors any goal in that game.

With the 2-0 lead and sitting at a commanding position, Jose Mourinho made his players stay behind and soak up the pressure put by the Gunners. The host didn’t display much attacking football in the second half, but the damage was already done in the first half of the game.

Spurs fans, who were to the stadium, would have been in great mood after their teams display in that North London derby and their team are now 11 points ahead of their local rivals…after 11 games. With just 30% possession, Spurs took the 3 points to sit on top of the Premier League table.
