Introduction to Tonsils

Tonsils are two clumps of tissue that sit in the back of the upper throat and are a part of your immune system. These can easily trap germs that get into one’s body through the mouth or nose resulting in the tonsils becoming swollen or infected. 

The immune system’s first line of defense against viruses and germs that enter your mouth is your tonsils. The rare incidences of tonsillitis in adults may be due to a reduction in the tonsil’s immune system function after puberty.

Prevalent viruses and bacterial infections are the most common causes of tonsillitis. Streptococcus pyogenes, the same bacterium responsible for strep throat, is the most frequent cause of tonsillitis. 

 

Method used to cure Tonsils

Home-care strategies

First and foremost, one can easily make use of at-home care strategies during the recovery time which include the following:

  1. Encouraging the patient to rest and get adequate sleep can improve health.
  2. Preventing dehydration by providing enough water to keep the throat moist.
  3. Providing warm and comforting liquids such as broth, hot tea, soup or warm water with honey can help soothe the sore throat.
  4. Saltwater gargles comprising 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 milliliters) of table salt to 8 ounces of warm water can help soothe a sore throat. 
  5. By using a cool-air humidifier, one can eliminate the dry air that usually tends to irritate a sore throat. 
  6. Throat lozenges can provide major relief to a sore throat and are readily available. 
  7. One must avoid any sort of smoke or cigarettes that can provide any sort of irritation to the throat.

Antibiotics

If a bacterial infection causes tonsillitis, the doctor may prescribe a course of antibiotics, including penicillin, the most common antibiotic for tonsillitis. In case the patient is allergic to penicillin, the doctor will prescribe an alternative antibiotic to provide relief.

The patient must complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed even if the symptoms go away completely as a failure of this course may result in the infection worsening or even infection spreading to other parts of the body.

One can also consult a doctor in regards to using ibuprofen such as Advil and Children’s Motrin, or acetaminophen such as Tylenol, to minimize the pain in the throat and control the fever.

Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is surgery carried out to remove tonsils. Children who have sore throats often or who snore commonly have their tonsils taken out. But tonsillectomies aren’t just for kids. Adults may also need a tonsillectomy, and even though the procedure for both remains the same, the aspects of recovery and risk differ by a margin.

A tonsillectomy is usually performed if tonsillitis results in various harmful complications which can prove to be fatal, such as:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Difficulty in swallowing, especially chunky foods such as meat
  • Abscesses that don’t improve even with antibiotic treatment

Treatment Process

Men may undergo tonsillectomy because of a chronic throat infection, which is the most common reason. Adults who underwent the procedure of tonsillectomy have had many instances of sore throats for 1 to 3 years or have had a sore throat and swollen tonsils caused by infection for at least 3 months. The sore throat might be relieved with antibiotics for a certain period, but it comes back once the treatment is over. 

Apart from that, obstructive sleep apnea which is caused by the blockage of the upper airway caused by swollen tonsils and even bad breath caused by a collection of pus and debris in the tonsil area and rare cases, even cancer which has spread from your head or neck area can require an adult to undergo tonsillectomy.
